In the realm of artistic expression, the journey of a prolific painter began at a young age. Michael Cartwright was introduced to the world of painting by his father, an Australian Impressionist painter, who ignited and nurtured the budding artist’s passion for art, introducing him first to Maurice Utrillo and then other French Impressionists. These guiding inspirations were followed by the Fauves and the German Expressionists and later, the Abstract Expressionists, whose unbridled portrayal of the human spirit captivated him. Their influence created in him a profound love for colour and artistic freedom and shaped Cartwright’s artistic sensibility in ways that would resonate throughout his career.

“It all filtered into my work and it’s still there working away on me, working towards that total freedom of the abstract expression; without being bored, doing the same old thing over and again, I never want that. I need to be constantly in change.”

As Cartwright’s artistic journey unfolded, these various influences seamlessly merged into his creations, guiding him towards the world of the abstract. The artist embraced change and constant evolution, steadfast in his commitment to break free from the confines of convention.

For Cartwright, freedom is paramount, and he constantly challenges the status quo in his works. Early on, he found expression in storytelling through art, where reality intertwined with fiction, allowing him to craft narratives with boundless latitude. His “Going to Town series” reflected a desire to progress and change, while the “Cocky” series delved into the struggles of Australian birds amidst a backdrop of societal and environmental challenges, metaphors for the ongoing dramas of life.

With the passage of time, the artist’s interest shifted to the mesmerizing colors and reflections found in water—an elusive and abstract subject that stirred his deeper emotions. Capturing the essence of water’s fleeting nature became a pursuit of the soul, with the artist aiming to evoke the transience and profundity of life rather than merely replicating its outward physical form on the canvas.

One of Cartwright’s most significant turning points in his painting was during his art residency one winter in Balinskelligs, Ireland, living atop the Atlantic Ocean, in a pre famine village hut. The untamed power and ever-changing nature of the sea and wind left an indelible mark on his work. He would race every morning at sunrise to peer into the golden light as it sprinkled and sparkled on the violent sea, racing to catch moments of its reflections and changes in the dots and dashes of his paint. The freedom and joy of the moment was his to capture, an embrace of the relentless dance of transformation. 

“We lived right on top of the Atlantic Ocean and experienced its amazing power, its absolute wild freedom and total abandonment in the sense that nothing about it was static, it is in constant flux going every which way, it is unknown, it is pure abstraction; I am looking for that in my art.”

In this most recent series of Cartwright’s  paintings, the artist has centered each piece around water as its starting point. While some paintings remain anchored in reality, their essence strain to be set free. Others subtly allude to recognizable landmarks along the Côte d’Azur and others are completely unleashed explosions of colour. A chronological progression in his artistic development is evident in these paintings with the first work emerging out of the wintry depths of the Marseille coastline and another when spring arrives, leading to the vibrant ecstatic canvas of a river in flood with the profusion of life in all its fresh newness, settling into glorious sunset and light infused hills over the ocean, then into his latest diptych capturing the blistering heat of summer. This exhibition showcases Cartwright’s journey towards greater freedom, liberation from the past, and an unyielding commitment to continuous growth.

Perhaps the greatness of Cartwright’s work is the recognition of his progress, his absolute commitment to defy convention and the status quo, to walk into his studio and undress from life’s expectation to conform to ‘the way things are done’. He abandons everything to immerse himself in the immediacy and urgency of painting in the now.

Dans le domaine de l’expression artistique, le parcours d’un peintre prolifique a commencé dès son plus jeune âge. Michael Cartwright a été initié au monde de la peinture par son père, un peintre impressionniste australien, qui a enflammé et nourri la passion de l’artiste en herbe pour l’art, en lui présentant d’abord Maurice Utrillo, puis d’autres impressionnistes français. Ces inspirations ont été suivies par les Fauves et les Expressionnistes allemands et, plus tard, par les Expressionnistes abstraits, dont la représentation débridée de l’esprit humain l’a captivé. Leur influence a fait naître en lui un amour profond pour la couleur et la liberté artistique, et a façonné la sensibilité artistique de Cartwright d’une manière qui résonnera tout au long de sa carrière.

“Tout cela a filtré dans mon travail et c’est encore là que je travaille, pour atteindre cette liberté totale de l’expression abstraite, sans m’ennuyer, sans faire la même chose encore et encore, je ne veux jamais cela ; j’ai besoin d’être constamment en changement”.

Au fur et à mesure que le parcours artistique de Cartwright se déroule, ces diverses influences se fondent dans ses créations, le guidant vers le monde de l’abstrait. L’artiste a embrassé le changement et l’évolution constante, fermement décidé à s’affranchir des conventions.

Pour Cartwright, la liberté est primordiale et il remet constamment en question le statu quo dans ses œuvres. L’un des tournants les plus importants de la peinture de Cartwright a eu lieu lors de sa résidence artistique d’un hiver à Balinskelligs, en Irlande, au bord de l’océan Atlantique, dans une hutte de village datant de l’époque de la famine. La puissance sauvage et la nature changeante de la mer et du vent ont laissé une marque indélébile sur son travail. Chaque matin, au lever du soleil, il se précipitait pour contempler la lumière dorée qui saupoudrait et étincelait sur la mer violente, s’efforçant de capturer les reflets et les changements dans les points et les traits de sa peinture. La liberté et la joie de l’instant étaient à capturer, une étreinte de la danse incessante de la transformation. 

“Nous vivions au bord de l’océan Atlantique et nous avons fait l’expérience de son incroyable puissance, de sa liberté sauvage absolue et de son abandon total dans le sens où rien n’est statique, il est en flux constant et va dans tous les sens, il est inconnu, c’est de l’abstraction pure ; c’est ce que je recherche dans mon art.”

Dans cette dernière série de peintures de Cartwright, l’artiste a centré chaque pièce sur l’eau comme point de départ. Si certaines peintures restent ancrées dans la réalité, leur essence s’efforce d’être libérée. D’autres font subtilement allusion à des points de repère reconnaissables le long de la Côte d’Azur, tandis que d’autres encore sont des explosions de couleurs complètement déchaînées. Une progression chronologique dans son développement artistique est évidente dans ces peintures, avec la première œuvre émergeant des profondeurs hivernales du littoral marseillais et une autre à l’arrivée du printemps, menant à la toile vibrante et extatique d’une rivière en crue avec la profusion de la vie dans toute sa fraîcheur ; s’installant dans un glorieux coucher de soleil et des collines infusées de lumière sur l’océan, puis dans son dernier diptyque capturant la chaleur étouffante de l’été. Cette exposition présente le voyage de Cartwright vers une plus grande liberté, une libération du passé et un engagement inflexible en faveur d’une croissance continue.

La grandeur de l’œuvre de Cartwright réside peut-être dans la reconnaissance de ses progrès, de son engagement absolu à défier les conventions et le statu quo, à entrer dans son atelier et à se déshabiller de l’attente de la vie de se conformer à “la façon dont les choses sont faites”. Il abandonne tout pour se plonger dans l’immédiateté et l’urgence de peindre dans l’instant.
